Before we go in to decide the various Passover recipes, let us go into just a few details regarding the origin of Passover. The story of Passover goes like this. About 3000 years back, the then Egyptian king had captured some Israeli soldiers. Moses, a shepherd then was asked by god to tell Egyptian king to release the soldiers as per his orders. But when Moses went to the king of Egypt, he refused and made fun of almighty. At this behavior of the king the god cursed Egypt and ten biggest miseries then destroyed it. These were Blood, Frogs, Lice, Flies, Cattle diseases, Boils, Hailstorms, Locusts, Darkness and death of the first born. But god wanted to know which ones were the houses of Israelites and which of them belonged to the Egyptians so that he could pass-over the houses of Israelites and curse those of Egyptians. But inspite of everything that caused suffering to the Egyptians, their king refused to free the Jewish prisoners. But in the end he had to free them, but this time he also sent his army to kill the Israelites. This news led to the fleeing of Israelites from their homes in a hurry. The Jews left their houses at such a short notice that they didn’t even have the time to cook the dough. They took along uncooked dough which they planned to cook in the desert heat. This dough when cooked in desert came to be known as Matzohs. The Egyptian soldiers followed the Jews to the red sea where the god helped the Jews cross it safely and drowned the Egyptians. This was an eight day long episode. It is in remembrance of this great event that Passover is celebrated. Passover recipes can be found in various cookbooks.
